ADA Sign Mounting Height
In September 2010 the Department of Justice (DOJ) has adopted a new set of ADA compliant signage standards. These standards will take effect March 15, 2012 and replace DOJ’s original ADA standards. DOJ is allowing immediate use of the 2010 standards as an alternative to the original 1991 standards. DOJ’s standards apply to facilities covered by the ADA, including places of public accommodation, commercial facilities, and state and local government facilities.
Below is an excerpt from this new standard:
703.4 Installation Height and Location. Signs with tactile characters shall comply with 703.4.
703.4.1 Height Above Finish Floor or Ground. Tactile characters on signs shall be located 48 inches (1220 mm) minimum above the finish floor or ground surface, measured from the baseline of the lowest tactile character and 60 inches (1525 mm) maximum above the finish floor or ground surface, measured from the baseline of the highest tactile character.
EXCEPTION: Tactile characters for elevator car controls shall not be required to comply with 703.4.1.
